The Petrophysical Laboratory 

The petrophysical laboratory is one of the Key Geomechanics Laboratories and is mainly engaged in rock physical properties measurement and experimental research, which is able to provide first-class test conditions for deep geological exploration, geophysical interpretation and comprehensive scientific researches. As the main equipment, the Autolab 2000C rock physical properties testing system imported from the NER Company is used to conduct experimental studies under different stresses, pore pressures and temperatures to gain the elastic wave and shear wave velocities,permeability,resistivity, and some mechanics parameters of rocks.

Research direction

Theoretical research and the seismic and engineering applications

Velocity measurements of the sound wave through rocks are widely used in geophysics and engineering to study the structure, composition and physical states of the crust. For example, laboratory measurements of elastic (Vp) and shear (Vs) wave velocites in rocks at elevated pressures may be used to interpret crustal velocities obtained by seismic refraction in terms of petrology since velocities are very sensitive to rock composition. Similarly, difference between laboratory and true velocities can be used to estimate formation porosity; the formation velocities themselves are used to make time-depth conversions in seismic reflection surveys. Other applications of such data include the prediction of seismic reflectivity at lithologic boundaries in the crust and the estimation of the engineering properties of rocks.
