 The Rock Mechanics Laboratory

The Rock Mechanics Laboratory of the Institute of Geomechanics was established in 1950s. The laboratory was equipped with a 200-ton electro-hydraulic servo-controlled triaxial-compression apparatus and a 30-ton uniaxial-compression testing machine, and became one of laboratories to conduct pioneering researches on physical and mechanical properties of rock and soil. In 1988, the Laboratory successfully developed the high-temperature high-pressure vessel and temperature control systems with the ability of investigating rock physical properties under the temperature and pressure of deep mantle.
TAW-2000 electro-hydraulic servo-controlled machine is instructed by a computer,and it could monitor the functions of load, strain and displacement, with fast transient response and wide load-bearing.

Conventional rock mechanics experimental research
it is mainly engaged in experimental testing and researches on static mechanical properties of brittle materials such as rocks and concretes, including compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, deformation parameters, acoustic characteristics and differential strain-stress measurement.  In addition, it is capable to carry out low-cycle fatigue test, creep test, triaxial compressive strength test, and stress-strain complete process curve.

High temperature and high pressure rock mechanics experimental research
it is to measure rock physical and mechanical properties under high temperature and high pressure; study rock deformation characters and strength charactes, rheological properties and tectonic conditions of ore deposit; explore the rock deformation and phase change, the relation between centralization and/or dispersion of elements and the effect of tectonic stress under the upper mantle conditions stimulated by experimental methods.

Besides a large number of basic experimental tests, the Laboratory also provides the testing and research services of dynamic and static rock mechanic properties for many institutions including railways, highways, urban development, hydropower, mining, oilfield and etc. by TAW-2000 system.

1. Testing and application research on rock mechanics.
2. Deep geological research.
3. Development of rock mechanics facility.
4. Study on the testing theories and experimental method for rock mechanics.

Part of research projects undertaken in recent years
The rock mechanics research on "Investigation and assessment of the crustal stability in the construction area of the west route of South-North Water Diversion Project" supported by China Geological Survey Bureau, 2001-2003.
Application of geostress in refracturing" in Shengli Oil Field, Sinopec 2004-2008.
Laboratory studies of rock properties and their application in geophysical data interpretation(SINOPROBE-07-02)
Experimental measurement and database development for physical properties of main rock types in China(SINOPROBE-07-03)
